3 Boring Things You Can Stop Doing (And Still Build a Big Brand on Facebook)

Want to build a brand on Facebook?

Here’s 3 ‘accepted wisdom’ – yet pretty tedious – methods that you really don’t need to do:

  1. Post Multiple Times Per Day

The logic is that you get in front of your audience more often, so have more chance to make sales.

The reality is that I’ve never seen anybody who posts more than once a day on a regular basis without the quality of their content dropping as a result.

When someone else appears in your newsfeed on 5 separate occasions in a day, do you think ‘YAY, another post from this same person. Lucky me – I’ve had to wait a full 30 minutes since the last one!’

Of course you don’t. Instead it gets annoying. Like that needy friend who keeps sending you long text messages with 14 separate questions which all need answering.

There’s no way this could ever be considered annoying, right?

Instead, I want to train people to know that when they see my name in the newsfeed, it’s going to be worth paying attention to. Even if they only see it 3 times per week. Quality > quantity.

It’s not like there’s a shortage of posts on Facebook and we have to fill the gap!

  1. Cold DM People

If you’re not familiar with this, it’s essentially where you message folks you don’t know and ask them to sign up to your thing.

Still definitely not annoying.

It’s not that this doesn’t work – many people have built their entire business on it.

It’s just that it’s not necessary.

Back when I was in corporate, I used to dream of escaping home to work for myself. Free from tyrannical bosses. Free from dreary meetings and tasks I didn’t care about.

So spending 2 hours each morning cutting and pasting pitches to people who aren’t interested is not how I want to spend my life today.

Instead, I make around 4-5 quality posts a week and let interested prospects come to me.

What happens is that because my post quality remains high, people start to notice. They then recommend you to other people. Who then in turn recommend you…and so on.

Before you know it you’ve got people following you from all kinds of places and you have no idea how they got there!

  1. Comment on Other People’s Posts/Post in Groups

You’ve probably seen folks making thinly veiled ‘value posts’ in other people’s Facebook groups as an attempt to find customers.

Or commenting on other people’s posts in the hope they will get noticed by potential clients.

Again, same as with number 1 and 2 – it’s not that this can’t work. It’s that it’s really dull and boring. Is it what you want to spend your time doing?

Instead of building someone else’s Facebook group or leaving comments nobody reads, why not invest the time to learn how to build your own brand on your Facebook personal profile?

Obviously you have to do it in the right way so you don’t fall foul of the Facebook terms of service. You can’t go in all ‘hardcore closer’.
